Recognizable Subjects, Free Handling

Search for contemporary figurative painting and the results split between auction news, museum essays and decorating tips. We are a gallery, and we are preparing to list two figure paintings with very different surfaces, so we wanted one page that explains the words we use to describe them, with every definition tied to a named source.

For the traditional schools these two canvases contrast with, see our guide to Balinese art styles.

Wikipedia’s Figurative art entry says figurative art is artwork, especially painting and sculpture, that is clearly derived from real-world sources and is therefore representational. It adds that figurative art is not the same thing as figure painting, although human and animal figures are common subjects. The entry sets figurative against abstract art, and says that since abstract art emerged, “figurative” has been applied to any modern art that keeps strong references to the real world. It also notes that figurative art rests on abstracted shapes, which means simplifying a figure does not make a painting abstract.

That definition fits both paintings below. Each turns the human body into simplified shapes, flat color planes in one and mottled gold patches in the other, yet you can read every pose. If you want work with no recognizable subject at all, our abstract painting guide covers that side of the gallery.

The Labels

Modern vs Contemporary Art: Which Label Fits These Two Paintings

Wikipedia’s Contemporary art entry says the term generally means art created from the 1970s onward, though definitions vary. It says art from the past 20 years is very likely included, and that smaller commercial galleries and magazines may use a stricter cutoff such as 2000. It also says that in English the words modern and contemporary are often treated as synonyms, which confuses non-specialists, and that some specialists see the boundary as blurry.

The same entry reports the sociologist Nathalie Heinich’s view that modern and contemporary art are two partly overlapping paradigms: modern art challenges the conventions of representation, while contemporary art challenges the notion of an artwork itself. We mention it because it shows that the two labels are argued over by specialists too.

Strictly speaking, contemporary is a date label, and we do not have a completion date for either canvas. So when we call these two canvases contemporary figurative painting, that is a working description of style, and we will not put a date on either one until we have it from the artist.

Cubist Figures

Cubist Figures: Three Figures Broken Into Colored Planes

Three figures among planes of pink, blue, purple and gold, in a plain black frame. Photo: Arts of Bali.

In the first painting, three figures fill a tall canvas. Two wear headwraps striped in white and blue and the third a purple wrap. None of the faces has features: two are flat patches of gold paint and the third is a dense black oval. Their garments are cut into panels, one a diamond lattice in orange and violet, another a band of horizontal stripes. Ribbons of hot pink and teal sweep across the figures. The background is divided into planes of purple, blue, orange, white and teal, with one large yellow arc behind the figure on the right and a thin teal line curving across the middle.

Wikipedia’s Cubism entry says the movement began in Paris in the early 20th century and was pioneered together by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Cubist artists analyzed their subjects, broke them into pieces and reassembled them in abstract form, showing an object from multiple perspectives instead of one. The entry places Analytic Cubism from 1910 to 1912, and Synthetic Cubism from about 1912 to 1914, with simpler shapes, brighter colors and experiments with texture and pattern.

We find that last description a useful reference for this canvas: bright color, patterned garments and a space cut into flat pieces. It is a comparison of looks only. It is not a statement about the painter’s training or influences, which we do not know.

Impasto

Impasto: Sculpted Flowers and Gold Skin Under a Hanging Lamp

The second painting is quieter. Two figures sit on a gray floor beneath a hanging lamp with a dark conical shade, and the bulb throws a pale yellow-green cone across a mottled green background. The figure on the left turns away, head resting on one hand, wrapped in dark gray cloth. The figure on the right leans back on one arm and looks up toward the light, in a pink wrap. Both bodies are covered in patches of gold, orange and brown. White flowers with small red centers rise on thin dark stems on both sides, and their petals stand off the canvas like sculpted ridges.

Wikipedia’s Impasto entry defines impasto as a technique in which paint is laid on thickly, usually thick enough that brush or knife strokes remain visible. Once dry it creates texture, so the paint seems to project from the canvas. The entry says thick paint reflects light in a distinctive way, can move a painting toward a sculptural quality, and lets viewers see the force and speed of the brushwork or knife work.

On media, the entry says oil paint is the traditional choice because of its thick consistency and slow drying time, and that acrylic can be used for impasto when heavy body acrylic gels are added. We cannot tell oil from acrylic in a photograph, so we make no claim about this canvas. For how the two media compare for a buyer, see our guide to acrylic vs oil painting in Bali.

The ridged strokes in both paintings look like they could be knife work, but we have not confirmed the tool. For the blade technique itself, our palette knife painting guide follows one Bali painter who works with a knife.

Side by Side

Contemporary Figurative Painting at a Glance: The Two Canvases Compared

Feature

Cubist figures painting

Lamp and flowers painting

Subject

Three figures with headwraps and patterned garments

Two seated figures under a hanging lamp, with white flowers

Palette

Hot pink, blue, purple, teal, gold and orange

Greens, gold, orange and brown, a gray floor, white flowers

Space

Cut into flat colored planes

A lit cone of yellow-green behind the figures

Surface

Ridged strokes following each panel

Raised petals and flecked, mottled skin patches

Frame in the photos

Plain black

Warm wood grain, linen-colored mat, thin gold liner

Reference point

Cubism, as a comparison of looks only

Impasto, as a description of surface only

Artist, date, medium, size, price

Not yet confirmed

Not yet confirmed

The first five rows describe what we can see in our own photographs, and the sixth is a comparison of looks. A close-up of a contemporary figurative painting shows how the paint sits, so we photographed both canvases in detail.

Detail of the cubist painting: ridged strokes, striped headwraps and the diamond pattern on the central garment. Photo: Arts of Bali.

In the detail of the cubist painting, the paint sits in ridges that follow the shape of each panel. The diamond pattern on the central garment is drawn in dark lines over thick color, the pink ribbon is built from parallel strokes, and the black face reads as a dense, almost flat area beside the heavily worked gold ones.

Detail of the lamp painting: raised white petals, red flower centers and flecked gold skin. Photo: Arts of Bali.

In the detail of the lamp painting, the petals stand up as small peaks with pale highlights along their tops, each with a red dot at its center. The gold patches on the skin are broken by darker brown flecks. A signature sits near the lower right edge, but we cannot read it from the photo, so we name no one.

Because thick paint reflects light in a distinctive way, a textured painting changes as the light and your position change. That is why we send close-ups and a second angle when someone asks about a piece.

Framing

Framing Two Different Moods: Warm Wood With a Mat, and Plain Black

The photos show the lamp painting in a warm wood-grain frame with a linen-colored mat and a thin gold liner, and the cubist painting in a plain black frame. In our reading of these two works of contemporary figurative painting, the mat gives the raised flowers some air and the black frame lets the colors carry, but that is an observation about these two photos, not a rule. Our guide to framing a Balinese painting compares natural wood, gold leaf and black timber as options.

From Our Side

What We Know and What We Defer On

We are an art gallery in Seminyak. We have looked at both canvases framed and in detail, but they are not catalogued yet. For each one, the artist, completion date, medium, exact size and price are still to come. A signature in a lower corner is not enough for us to attribute a work, so we name no one, and we claim no art-historical lineage for either painting beyond the comparisons made above. The listings will carry those details when they go live, and we will update this page. The figures may be stylized, flattened or broken into shapes. Wikipedia’s Figurative art entry describes figurative work as clearly derived from real-world sources and therefore representational, in contrast to abstract art.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
What is the difference between modern and contemporary art?

Wikipedia says contemporary art generally means art from the 1970s onward, with definitions that vary, while in English the two words are often treated as synonyms. It reports Nathalie Heinich’s view that modern art challenges the conventions of representation and contemporary art challenges the notion of an artwork itself. Specialists see the boundary as blurry.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
What makes a painting cubist?

Per Wikipedia, cubist artists analyzed a subject, broke it into pieces and reassembled it in abstract form, showing it from multiple perspectives instead of one. The movement began in Paris in the early 20th century and was pioneered by Picasso and Braque. Its later phase, Synthetic Cubism, used simpler shapes, brighter colors and patterns.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
What is impasto?

Impasto is a technique in which paint is laid on thickly, usually thick enough that brush or knife strokes remain visible. Wikipedia says that once dry it creates texture, so the paint seems to project from the canvas. Thick paint also reflects light in a distinctive way and can give a painting a sculptural quality.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
Is figurative art the opposite of abstract art?

Wikipedia sets figurative art against abstract art, but notes that abstract art is itself derived from a figurative or other natural source. It also says that since abstraction emerged, “figurative” has been used for any modern art that keeps strong references to the real world. A stylized figure can therefore still be figurative.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
Can impasto be done in acrylic as well as oil?

Yes. Wikipedia says oil paint is the traditional medium for impasto because of its thick consistency and slow drying time, and that acrylic can be used when heavy body acrylic gels are added. Watercolor and tempera are generally unsuitable without a thickening agent because they are thin. You cannot reliably tell the medium from a photo.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
How should I look at a heavily textured painting?

Move around it. Wikipedia says thick paint reflects light in a distinctive way, so ridges and peaks look different as the light and your position change. Compare a full-frame view with a close-up, and ask for a second angle if you are buying remotely. At Arts of Bali we send close-up photos on request.
</details>
<details class="faq-item">
Are the two paintings in this guide for sale at Arts of Bali?

They are the paintings we are preparing to list.
