How to Commission Art in Bali: A Complete Step-by-Step Guide

“A painting bought off the wall is a discovery. A commissioned painting is a collaboration. It’s the difference between finding swebp omething you like, and creating exactly what you need.”

If you’re reading this, you probably have a photo on your phone right now. Maybe it’s a blurry snapshot of a beloved golden retriever, a moment from your wedding day, or a specific landscape you want scaled to fill a massive living room wall. You know what you want — but you’re not sure how to commission art in Bali from the other side of the world. Will the artist actually capture the likeness? How long does it take? Is it safe to ship? At Arts of Bali, we’ve stripped the guesswork out of this process. Here’s exactly how we turn your reference photo into a hand-painted canvas — from that first WhatsApp message to your front door.

How to Commission Art in Bali — The 4-Step Process:

1. The Consultation: Send your reference photos and desired dimensions via WhatsApp or email.
2. The Studio: Our specialist artists begin painting in Seminyak — matched to your subject type.
3. The Approval: We photograph the finished piece and send high-resolution images for your final sign-off. Revisions included at no extra charge.
4. The Delivery: The approved canvas is rolled, sealed in a crush-proof PVC tube, and shipped internationally by DHL or FedEx directly to your door.

A real Google review from Keri Williams, who commissioned a black-and-white portrait of her dog Rubi. Left: the original reference photo. Right: the finished hand-painted canvas. Keri specifically requested the black-and-white treatment with selective colour — and that’s exactly what she got. Every tone and texture built by hand, not by a printer.

How to Commission Art in Bali: Starting the Conversation

You don’t need to know the difference between impasto and glazing. That’s our job. Whether you walk into the gallery at Jl. Raya Seminyak or send a WhatsApp from Sydney at midnight, the process starts the same way: you send us a photo.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. Want to combine the background of one photo with the subjects of another? We can do that. During this first conversation, we’ll focus on two things: Scale and Subject. Tell us your wall dimensions and we’ll advise on the right canvas size. Once we agree on the details, a deposit secures the artist’s schedule — and the real work begins.

One of our portrait specialists mid-commission, referencing the client’s original photo directly on his phone. This is how it actually works — the artist keeps the reference in front of him throughout the entire session, checking likeness stroke by stroke. There are no shortcuts in this studio.

A French Bulldog commission mid-progress in our open-air Seminyak studio. The palette in the foreground tells the whole story — dozens of individual colour mixes built for this dog’s coat alone. That layering process is what separates an original hand-painted canvas from any print you could order online.

The Right Artist for the Right Subject

Arts of Bali isn’t a factory line. Our painters are specialists — we match each commission to the artist, not the other way around. We don’t hand a complex wedding portrait to a landscape painter.

For a human portrait, the canvas goes to artists trained in classical anatomy and the specific layering of skin tones. For a family pet, we assign an artist who works exclusively in hyper-realistic pet portraits — someone who can render individual hairs on a 60cm canvas without losing the animal’s personality. For couples who want their special day captured, our custom wedding paintings focus on dress details, venue light, and the feeling of the moment. And for interiors that need texture, our textured realism specialists build heavy palette knife surfaces with real 3D impasto depth you can run your fingers across.

How Long Does It Actually Take?

Good art can’t be rushed. Depending on canvas size and subject complexity, a commission generally takes 7 to 14 days to complete. Oil layers need proper drying time between applications. We give you a clear, honest timeline before you pay a deposit — and we stick to it.

The Final Reveal and Safe International Transit

When the last brushstroke is down, the painting isn’t shipped. Not yet. We photograph it under gallery lighting and send the high-resolution images directly to you for approval. If a shadow needs softening, a colour wants warming, or a detail needs sharpening — we handle it before the canvas leaves our studio. The piece only ships when you’re completely satisfied.

Two Arts of Bali shipping formats side by side: a foam-wrapped framed canvas secured with FRAGILE tape on the left, and a sealed PVC shipping tube for rolled canvases on the right

Two formats we use regularly. Framed canvases for local or regional delivery are wrapped in protective foam with FRAGILE security seals. For international shipping, the canvas is removed from its stretcher bars, rolled carefully, and sealed inside a rigid PVC tube — the safest and most cost-effective way to fly original artwork across the globe.

We ship internationally every week. We use DHL and FedEx — you get a tracking number from the moment it leaves our hands. The final step. A custom cat portrait, safely delivered and framed locally by the client — currently being inspected by the muse itself. From a single reference photo to a permanent family piece. That’s the whole journey.

What Clients Always Ask Before Ordering

Can you combine two different photos into one painting?
Yes — and this is one of the biggest advantages of a custom commission over buying off the shelf. If you have a great photo of your family but want to change the background to a specific Bali beach, we can do that. If you want two pets painted together who were never photographed side-by-side, our artists can blend multiple references into one cohesive composition. Just send us both images and explain what you’re imagining.
Do I have to pay the full price upfront?
No. We require a 50% deposit to start work and secure the artist’s schedule. The remaining balance — plus shipping costs — is only due after you’ve seen the final photos of the completed painting and given your full approval. You never pay the balance blind.
What if I don’t like the painting when you send the photo?
Because we align on scale, style, and references before we start, full rejections are incredibly rare. But if you want a shadow softened, a colour brightened, or a feature refined — we make those adjustments before shipping. Minor revisions are included at no extra charge. The canvas only leaves our studio when you’re completely happy with it.
Is it safe to ship a rolled canvas? Will the paint crack?
Yes, entirely safe. We only roll paintings once the paint is completely dry and cured. The canvas is rolled face-out with protective non-stick layers between each turn, then sealed inside a rigid PVC tube. When it arrives, simply take it to any local framer to have it re-stretched over a wooden frame. It’ll look exactly as it did in our studio.
How much does a custom painting cost?
Pricing depends on canvas dimensions and subject complexity — a single pet portrait is priced differently from a large landscape with multiple figures. Send us your reference photo and wall dimensions on WhatsApp, and we’ll have a clear, no-obligation quote back to you within hours. For a general overview of what to expect, see our Bali painting price guide.
