Pagerwesi Day in Bali: Date, Meaning and What Happens

Pagerwesi day is a Balinese Hindu holy day held on Buda Kliwon wuku Sinta, a Wednesday in the 210 day Pawukon calendar, four days after Saraswati. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday 4 November. The name means “iron fence”, from pager (fence) and wesi (iron), and the day honors Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru, described by Bali’s official tourism portal Love Bali as a manifestation of Shiva. This guide gives the 2026 date and the five day sequence around it, the meaning of the name, how families observe it, why Buleleng marks it on a larger scale, and what we could not verify.

Основные выводы

  • Pagerwesi falls on Buda Kliwon wuku Sinta, once every 210 days, according to Love Bali. In 2026 that gives Wednesday 8 April and Wednesday 4 November.
  • Our own count from the Pawukon table puts the next one on Wednesday 2 June 2027, 210 days after 4 November 2026. Confirm it against the official Bali calendar once that is printed.
  • Pagerwesi always lands on a Wednesday. A guide that gives a Friday date for it cannot be right.
  • The name joins pager (fence) and wesi (iron). Love Bali and the Jakarta Post both tie the day to Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru, the teacher aspect of Shiva.
  • Prayers and offerings start at the family shrine and move out to the extended family temple and the village temple, per Love Bali.
  • Buleleng marks it on a bigger scale, with families visiting the cemetery in a tradition called munjung ke setra.
  • We are a gallery, not a temple. We have no painting made for Pagerwesi. The closest piece is our Large Balinese Ceremony Procession Painting (acrylic on cotton canvas, 85 × 135 cm, Rp6,500,000).

What Is Pagerwesi Day in Bali?

Search for Pagerwesi in English and the results are short explainers and hotel notices, and some of them disagree on the date. We are a gallery, not a temple or a university. So this guide does three things: it gathers what named sources say, it shows the calendar arithmetic so that you can check the date yourself, and it says plainly where we could not verify a claim.

Love Bali, the official tourism portal of the Bali Provincial Government, says the name joins pager, meaning fence, and wesi, meaning iron. It says the day is held on Budha Kliwon in wuku Shinta, once every 210 days, close to Saraswati, and that it honors Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru, a manifestation of Shiva. Spelling varies between sources, with Buda or Budha and Sinta or Shinta. Indonesian sources call it Hari Raya Pagerwesi and write the day as Rabu Kliwon wuku Sinta. We use Buda and Sinta, as in the table on Wikipedia’s Календарь Павукон page.

Pagerwesi is one of several holy days that follow the Pawukon rather than the Gregorian year. Our guides to Тумпек Ландеп и Galungan cover two others that run on the same cycle, and the myths and rituals behind such days are mapped in our guide to Balinese mythology painting.

When Is Pagerwesi Day in 2026? The Five Day Sequence

Pagerwesi closes a run of five days that begins with Saraswati. Detik Bali’s 2026 Hindu holy day list gives Saraswati on Saturday 31 October and Pagerwesi on Wednesday 4 November, with the days between them in the table below. Our Saraswati Day guide covers the first two days in more detail.

How to check the date yourself

Wikipedia’s Pawukon table counts Saniscara Umanis wuku Watugunung as day 210, the last day of the cycle. The next day, Redite Paing wuku Sinta, starts a new cycle as day 1. Counting on from there, Buda Kliwon wuku Sinta is day 4. That is four days after Saraswati, which matches the DJKN Singaraja article, which also says it falls exactly four days after Saraswati. The count is our own working from the table, so treat it as a cross check, not as an official calendar.

Because the cycle is 210 days, Pagerwesi comes round about twice a Gregorian year. It fell on Wednesday 8 April 2026 and falls on Wednesday 4 November 2026. Adding 210 days gives Wednesday 2 June 2027 for the next one. Some English language guides list other dates for 2026, including a Friday. Pagerwesi is always a Wednesday, so we do not use those.

What Does Pagerwesi Mean? The Iron Fence Explained

The fence in the name is not a physical one. The DJKN Singaraja article, written by a civil servant, Dini Indri Irianti, with a personal opinion disclaimer, links the day to the phrase magehang awak, which it glosses as fencing oneself. The author reads knowledge as the true fence, which fits a day that comes four days after Saraswati. That reading is the author’s own, so we offer it as one view, not as doctrine.

On the god being honored, the sources agree. DJKN says the Lontar Sundarigama, a Balinese palm leaf text, names the day as one honoring Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa as Sanghyang Pramesti Guru. It adds that in the Tri Murti Shiva is the dissolver, and that the day is also called Rerahinan Gumi. The Jakarta Post’s 2013 report on Pagerwesi calls Sanghyang Pramesti Guru the “teacher” of the universe. It quotes the Hindu scholar Ketut Wiana: “Living without a teacher means living without guidance.”

Love Bali lists four meanings for the day: protecting oneself, reflection, purity and wisdom, and harmony and prosperity. These are readings of the day, not rules, and families give them different weight.

How Families Observe Pagerwesi Day

Love Bali says offerings and prayers begin at the sanggah, the family shrine. They then move to the extended family temple and finally to the village temple. The Jakarta Post adds morning visits to the Kahyangan Tiga temples, the three village temples linked to Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, as well as ancestral temples.

The scale changes from place to place. DJKN says the size of the observance follows desa kala patra, meaning place, time and circumstance, and runs from a modest level to a grand one. Our gebogan guide explains how offerings are tiered, which helps when you see a larger arrangement on a shrine.

The sources we read describe prayers and offerings at family and village temples. None of them describes a public parade for Pagerwesi, but we did not attend one ourselves, so we cannot say what you would see at a given temple.

Pagerwesi in Buleleng: Munjung ke Setra

Love Bali says Buleleng, the regency on Bali’s north coast, celebrates Pagerwesi on a scale like Galungan, with a custom called Munjung. The Jakarta Post makes the same contrast. It calls Pagerwesi a minor holiday in much of the island but a major one in Buleleng, where people who work elsewhere often return home for it. That report dates from 2013, so check with local friends how current it is.

The Jakarta Post says the day ends with prayers at cemeteries for relatives who have not yet been cremated, with offerings of rice, cakes and fruit followed by a meal. Budaya Bali describes the same custom as munjung ke setra, with families bringing banten of rice, tipat blayag, chicken, vegetables and bananas to the cemetery for their ancestors. It says southern Bali, including Denpasar and Gianyar, keeps Pagerwesi simpler and without cemetery visits.

Soma Ribek and Sabuh Mas: The Two Days Before

Soma Ribek is the Monday before Pagerwesi. Detik associates it with food. What’s New Indonesia says worship goes to Sang Hyang Sri Amrta, a goddess of fertility who dwells in the rice barn, and that farm work such as pounding rice is paused. Our Dewi Sri guide covers the rice goddess Dewi Sri and how painters show her.

Sabuh Mas is the Tuesday. Detik says families pray at the household merajan, place offerings at the sanggah, and give thanks for wealth, with Sang Hyang Mahadewa worshipped. It calls the day much quieter than Saraswati or Banyu Pinaruh. Neither day is the main event, but together with Pagerwesi they close the Saraswati cycle.

Pagerwesi Day and Balinese Painting

We know of no painting tradition tied to Pagerwesi, and our collection has no piece made for it. What we do have is ceremony scenes: crowds of devotees, temple gates and offerings on the move. They show what families do on holy days in general, not this one in particular. The table lists the closest piece. Our guides to temple ceremony painting и village life painting show more, and the wider story sources are mapped in our Картина из балийской мифологии hub.

Visiting Bali Around Pagerwesi Day

We have not found an official source that lists closures or rules for visitors on Pagerwesi, so we do not repeat the claims we have seen elsewhere. Some English language guides say offices may close or that the main ceremony is held at night. We could not verify either point. If you have a booking, an appointment or a transfer on 4 November, ask your hotel or host, who will know what the local banjar is doing.

Pagerwesi is a family and temple observance. If you are invited to a household or a temple, follow the lead of your host. If you are not, the best thing you can do is stay out of the way of people carrying offerings and walk around shrines, not through them.

“Pagerwesi is a quiet one here in the south. Families pray at home and at their temple, and the street carries on as usual. If you see someone carrying offerings, just let them pass.”

When is Pagerwesi day in November 2026?
Pagerwesi falls on Wednesday 4 November 2026, after an earlier occurrence on Wednesday 8 April. Detik Bali’s 2026 list gives the November date, and the Pawukon count from Saraswati on Saturday 31 October agrees with it.
When is Pagerwesi in 2027?
The first Pagerwesi of 2027 is Wednesday 2 June by our own count, 210 days after 4 November 2026. This is our arithmetic from the 210 day cycle, so confirm it against the official Bali calendar once it is published.
What does Pagerwesi mean?
Pagerwesi joins pager, meaning fence, and wesi, meaning iron, so it means iron fence. DJKN Singaraja links it to the phrase magehang awak, fencing oneself, and the author reads knowledge as the true fence. Love Bali lists self protection, reflection, purity and wisdom, and harmony and prosperity as its meanings.
Who is honored on Pagerwesi?
Sources name Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru, a manifestation of Shiva and the teacher of the universe. DJKN cites the Lontar Sundarigama for honoring Ida Sanghyang Widhi Wasa in that form. The Jakarta Post calls Pramesti Guru the teacher of the universe.
How is Pagerwesi different from Saraswati?
Saraswati comes first, on a Saturday, and is the day of knowledge. Pagerwesi follows four days later, on a Wednesday, and honors Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru. DJKN Singaraja reads the two together, with knowledge on Saraswati and fencing oneself with it on Pagerwesi, though that is the author’s own reading.
What is munjung ke setra?
Munjung ke setra is a Pagerwesi custom in Buleleng, where families take offerings of rice, tipat blayag, chicken, vegetables and bananas to the cemetery for ancestors who have not yet been cremated, according to Budaya Bali. The Jakarta Post describes the same cemetery prayers followed by a meal.
